About Kiva

The Children’s Kiva Montessori Charter School was established in 2014 and currently serves approximately 140 students from Kindergarten to 8th grade. Our school combines National and State Academic Content Standards with a Montessori educational approach, integrating community projects, expeditionary learning, and STREAM curriculum enrichment. We aim to address the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of every student in close collaboration with families and the community. Through multi-age classrooms, students engage in diverse academic levels and subjects, fostering independence and self-discipline through independent or group work. Our school provides an unconventional educational choice that emphasizes personal accountability, self-driven learning, high standards, and a global outlook.

In its tenth year, Kiva Charter is recognized for its diversity, global perspective, and passion for exploration, grounded in Montessori principles to meet the holistic educational requirements of each student. Situated in Cortez, Colorado, amidst the stunning Four Corners Region, our location boasts rivers, mountains, mesas, and canyons, offering exceptional outdoor opportunities for recreation, sports, and peace, from the 14,000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains to the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. The area is steeped in archaeological treasures, cultural and biological diversity, and a history of farming and ranching. Our community is often seen as one of the finest in the intermountain West, cherishing its heritage and surroundings.
